2.6.2 Coalification

The coalification behaviour is not the same for every maceral. This can be shown in the so-called Van Krevelen11 Diagrams (van Krevelen 1950). Bustin et al. (1983) adapted the basic diagram (Fig. 2.4).

Carbon dioxide, water and some methane are yielded during coalification. If coals are rich in resinite, some liquid hydrocarbons are also produced during this stage (Zeng 2016). Petrographic changes at the boundary of the dull/bright brown coal stage are very pronounced. Typical chemical changes are gelification (vitrinization) of humic substances. The coals, until this stage having a brown color, become black and lustrous. In the later bituminous coal stages, the amount of volatile matter decreases rapidly, due to the removal of aliphatic12 and alicyclic13 groups, and to increasing aromatization14 of humic complexes (Zeng 2016) (Fig. 2.4).
